Echoes of Pink Floyd

With Pink Floyd absent in the live music scene, five musicians from Michigan have risen to fill the void. They joined forces in 2003 to form Echoes of Pink Floyd, America’s Most Authentic Pink Floyd Tribute. Their devotion to the music of Pink Floyd has resulted in countless hours spent recreating the live experience of the legendary rock band.

Echoes of Pink Floyd is not the only group inspired enough to do this kind of tribute project. Far from it! What does set them apart is the amazing detail with which they perform the music. Authentic instrumentation, Guitar tones, drum fills, vocal harmonies, keyboard layers, female backup singers, and impeccably recreated sound effects: all of these are intensely studied and rehearsed in order to bring the listener exactly what they came to hear. Even the most hard core Pink Floyd fanatics are blown away by the meticulous attention to detail!

Every time Echoes of Pink Floyd takes the stage, they are contributing to a legacy. This is not a responsibility they take lightly, for they are playing music that has sold (and continues to sell) millions of albums worldwide and inspires multiple generations of music lovers to this very day! Echoes of Pink Floyd will show you why.

Police and pension will be top on city leaders’ minds

Police and pension will be top on city leaders’ minds in the coming months as they look to run Traverse City more like a business – an efficient and successful business. As Mayor Chris Bzdok describes it: some people focus on cost, some on the level of service, but the goal is to look at the intersection of the two and deliver value.

First up: the local police force. The city is looking at ways to cut police expenses while maintaining public safety. City commissioner Mary Ann Moore is chair of the group investigating how the department might run more cost-effectively. In early November the city approved a $25,000 contract with Alexander Weiss Consulting of Illinois to perform a “workload analysis” of the city’s police force.

Moore says the consultant is looking at “right sizing” the police staff – and at ways to streamline the police structure. She is quick to add that Police Chief Michael Warren is in total agreement with the analysis.

Next: the pension issue – involving city police, fire personnel and other bargaining units. The pensions are underfunded by $38 million dollars. To understand the issues and options moving forward, check out the November archives on the mayor’s website, planfortc.com. – Lynn Geiger

Traverse City State Theatre

The Traverse City Film Festival completely renovated Traverse City’s shuttered historic downtown movie house, and reopened it in November 2007. The festival operates the State as a year-round, community-based, mission-driven, non-profit, volunteer-staffed movie theater.

We don’t just show the best in new movies. We’ve got family films on Saturday at 10 a.m. and great classic films at 11 a.m. on Wednesdays, both for just 25 cents. We have a Monday Doc Night Series with filmmakers via Skype, a Sunday afternoon film series, and $3 Friday Night Flicks offering the best of cool midnight films.

And we are Traverse City’s town hall, opening our doors for free community events like our Spring Break Open House, sporting events, and screenings for students. We also broadcast the Met Opera live in high definition, show holiday movies, and bring premieres and special films on a regular basis.
